15th Hotrod Hobbies ‘Shootout’

The 15th anual ‘Hotrod Shootout’ kicked off recently and Team Durango drivers Jörn, Hupo, Carson and Travis were there to show their skills and try their best to take home a few trophies.

15th Hotrod Hobbies ‘Shootout’

Wednesday kicked off the event with open practice, which was followed by more of the same on Thursday before the qualifying kicked off. In 4WD buggy and Pro4 Short Course Jörn Neumann was on top form – taking the TQ in both these classes. And with a total of four Team Durango drivers in each main for these classes – the qualifying order was as follows:

Qualifying 4wd Buggy: 1st Jörn, 3rd Travis, 5th Hupo and 8th Carson

Jörn Neumann: My car felt good right from the start, I changed to heavier shock oil, because of the hot outside conditions. This made my car better, still a little bit to nervous. During practice and the 1st qualifier I used JConcepts tires, after that I switched to Losi tires. All other where using them as well. I could TQ the next 3 Rounds and was the overall TQ. In A1 I made an early mistakes which cost me a few seconds, but I could recover to 2nd. In A2 I had a close battle with Maifield the entire race, finnished 1st. Both had a 1st and 2nd, so A3 should decide everything, again I made an early mistake which put me from 1st to 10th. Then the gap was to much. Overall finnished 2nd, 1st Maifield, 3rd Tebo

Hupo Hönigl: 4wd finals were the ones where was the most action – Jörn always led from the start, but a couple of early mistakes in A1 and A3 cost him the overall win; Travis had some stong finals, but a stripped out spur gear in A3 cost him the podium, so he finished 4th; Carson had some good finals and finished 5th overall. My personal 4wd finals went anything other than good – I had really bad luck and finished in a dissapointing 7th place. In 2wd buggy, my qualifying got better and better – in the final round I managed a 4th for the round, which put me on the 6th spot for the A main; 4wd finals were the ones where was the most action – Jörn always led from the start, but a couple of early mistakes in A1 and A3 cost him the overall win; Travis had some stong finals, but a stripped out spur gear in A3 cost him the podium, so he finished 4th; Carson had some good finals and finished 5th overall.

Lutz takes two at Flowood R/C

Lutz takes two at Flowood R/C

This past weekend headed down to Flowood Mississippi to the only city owned track in the country. It was a great indoor facility with the best ventilation of any indoor track I have ever been. There was 250 entires over a variety of classes. I raced my standard 4 (Nitro Buggy and Truggy as well as E-Buggy and 4WD SC.)

This indoor clay track is what the Durango 4wd SC is made for. The truck was dialed the entire time on this track and I easily took TQ and victory putting in a lap time in the main that was nearly on par with my other 1/8th cars!

Lutz takes two at Flowood R/C

In Truggy I struggled a little on finding that perfect set-up for this semi tight indoor track. By the 3rd qualifier we had it pretty much down and I was able to take the TQ of rd 3 which put me 2nd overall behind Drake. In the main I was having some sort of carb / engine issue where the thing just wouldn’t come down off idle. When I let off the gas it would just keep racing forward so for 45 minutes I drove basically with the brakes and it just didn’t allow me to be competitive to Drake. I still managed a 2nd but about 2.5 laps down. Overall the truck was great thought.

In Nitro Buggy I had some electronic issues in Q1. A few to many mistakes in Q2 putting me 3rd and I was able to TQ rd 3. Overall qualified 2nd behind Drake again. In the main my car was dialed. Drake and I pulled from the field and had them about 2 – 3 laps down at the 25 minute mark. For most of that time I had held Drake about 5 seconds back as we put in blistering lap after lap. However my power plug connection would come undone at that time and happen again putting me a few laps behind Drake but still in 2nd. However with 8 minutes to go the rear diff stripped out. The screws on the clam shell had come loose for some reason and it ended the run for me.

In E-buggy my DEX408 worked well. I was able to take TQ and victory with it. At the end of the mains I let a few other people drive the buggy and they were all very impressed with it and I know a couple of them are sold on the Durango now! :-)

Lutz takes two at Flowood R/C

Overall I was pleased with all the vehicles. I have a quick turnaround this week heading to Texas Thursday for a R/C Pro event running 4 classes again!

KYLE MCBRIDE RACE REPORT – 2012 QLD STATE TITLES

KYLE MCBRIDE RACE REPORT – 2012 QLD STATE TITLES

This year the Queensland State titles were held at the Sunshine Coast Club, notorious for hosting some of the biggest and best events in Australia. With 120 entries with a great buggy and truggy field, it was going to be one of the biggest events in Australia this year. With everyone on a brand new track, choice of tire was the big question mark. Going into practice I had two seven minute practices to get it right before going into qualifying. Once qualifying came around I had both my Kyosho Inferno MP9 TKI3 andSTRR evo set up good and ready to go.

I had almost a clean sweep in buggy qualifying with winning 4 out of the 5 qualifiers. I had a decent truggy qualifying but had dramas in the last qualifier losing my chance for TQ but still giving me second on the grid. By finals time, I was super confident with my cars and as the top 10 cars were bumped straight into the a main without having to complete a semi-final.

In both finals I managed to get out front and finish off both classes with a comfortable margin and took home the win. Big thank you to Kyosho, Pro-Line (M4 Calibers for both cars worked awesome all weekend), O.S Speed, Ko Propo, Neo + Fuels, Venom, Podified Engines, Maugrafix and Steven Love for painting my bodies.

KYLE MCBRIDE RACE REPORT 15-June-2012

KYLE MCBRIDEs Cars

It has been about 5 years since I have driven an electric car, and going back to where I originally came from was exciting. I was looking forward to trying all the new cars I had never driven from the Kyosho electric range. Venom supplied me with all my electronics for the meeting, including their new range of “Red” race motors. My first big race the 2012 1/10th QLD Titles running 2WD Mod, 4WD Mod and Short course. The track down at Chargers RC was very well put together; the boys at the club did an excellent job in putting on a great event and providing everyone with a smooth and grippy surface to run on.

Day 1: Day one saw the threatening weather hold off for a fine day to complete 2WD buggy and 2WD short course qualifiers and finals. As soon as I hit the track both my cars felt fast. We went straight into the first qualifiers and managed to TQ the first round in both classes. With a couple of changes to my RB5, to make my car a wee bit smoother for the high speed turns, I went into the next qualifiers feeling very confident in my cars. I ended up TQ in all 4 rounds of Qualifying for both classes and was ready for the finals. Once the finals came around I knew my car was awesome and all I had to do was drive. I again managed to win all three A-mains in first place for both 2WD and 2WD Short Course, this was a very successful day and I’m very happy with both cars as they worked amazingly! The Venom electronics proved to be super smooth, and provided me with all the power I could ever need.

DAY 2: Day two saw a slow start to 4WD day as Mother Nature wasn’t too happy in the morning with some rain on the track. The track soaked it up really well and the first qualifier was going to be a bit slippery. My Lazer ZX-5 was pretty well perfect as soon as I hit the track and I TQ’d all Qualifiers. The mains came and the sun was out and the track was all dried up and building a nice groove. Qualifier one was really good for me as my car felt so great with a quick rear shock oil change on the rear helped my car to be a bit smoother all round. I won the first main with a comfortable lead and my car felt the best it has ever felt! A-main 2 saw me have to claw my way back from last after a tangle up on the first corner. I pushed as hard as I could and just missed out on the win by 2 seconds. With no changes to my car, in the last main I knew I had to just get out of the gate quicker so I do not find myself in any trouble! I went on to do this and to win the Overall 4WD for the day!

KYLE MCBRIDE RACE REPORT

Overall, this meeting was a pleasant and fun meeting for me as getting back into electric is something I’ve wanted to do for a while! I’d like to take this chance to thank my sponsors: Kyosho for the amazing cars, VENOM/ATOMIK for the brilliant batteries, speed controls and the new “RED” race motors, Pro-Line for the event “control” tires (Holeshot 2.0‘s worked great all weekend). Also a big thank to Ari Bakla at HEI for sponsoring the event and also helping me out., KO PROPO, Steven Love for painting my ‘mint as’ bodies which looked great all weekend and also won Short course concourse :) And finally my dad for helping me with getting all my cars ready!

DEX210 takes round three of North East BRCA regionals

DEX210 takes round three of North East BRCA regionals

Last weekend Batley Buggy Club hosted the 3rd round of the North East Outdoor Regional series. The weather in the UK has been terrible of late, with severe rain effecting most places. The week leading up to the meeting was no different and it looked as though it was going to be another wet meeting!

Practice
On the day of the meeting to our surprise the rain had stopped and even a little sunshine was beginning to appear. The track at Batley is multisurface with a combination of grass, astro and concrete. In the morning the track was still wet for practice and people were trying all sorts of tyres to see which worked best, in case the track didnt dry out, or it started to rain again. I went out in practice with my DEX210 and knew straight away that i was in for a good day, as my car was dialled!

Qualifying
By the time qualifying started the track had just about dried out which made choosing the right tyres less of an issue. After not been able to capitalise on my TQ spot at a previous round in the series, i was determined to take the TQ spot and go for the win! My car was even more dialled in qualifying than it was in practice, and i was able to take all four rounds of qualifying to put my DEX210 pole in the A-Main. Steve Lawson was 2nd and James Mcfadyen took the 3rd spot.

Final
In the final i got off to a really good start and held onto 1st position going into the first corner. I was then able to get into my groove and try to settle myself into the race. Steve Lawson was in 2nd pushing hard and trying to apply the pressure. After a few minutes i was able to settle down and just drove the track instead of worrying about what was going on behind. This proved to the right thing to do as i started to edge away from the chasing pack. I had an error free race with my DEX210 in the final and crossed the line to take a comfortable win, nearly quarter of a lap ahead of 2nd place Steve Lawson. Arslan Butt had a good race and moved up from his qualifying position of 4th to take 3rd place in the final.

Carson wins at inaugural Novak Short Course race

Carson wins at inaugural Novak Short Course race

Last weekend was the the first annual Novak Short Course race at Thunder Alley in Baumont CA.

In the 2wd SC class I struggled with the loose track conditions. I needed more time with the new car to get it dialled in. Even still, I managed to qualify 3rd and cruise around in the main and finish second.

In 4WD I dominated! My DESC410R was pretty dialed the whole day. I was able to TQ all three rounds of qualifying and win both mains! Everyone was surprised how fast our car was, not only indoors, but outside too!

team durango cars

Once again the car was amazing, great grip easy on the jump and reaaaallllly fast. We had prepared some setups to compare our different driving styles and we had a intense work to make our car perfect handling.

Qualifying :
Under a strong sunny day and 30°C we started the race with a great track, the jump where well designed. The straight became really bumpy and tricky on some parts. lots of cars finished in the barriers! From the first run, Armand was faster than all of us but it is DUFAU-CAZENAVE Alexis who took the best over all in the first round.

Second Qualifier saw Armand take the lead, Alexis was second, Gilles third and Alex took 4th position. 4 DEX 410 V3 in the 4 first places ;)This position didn’t change until the final…

Finals :
The weather was still sunny but cooler than saturday. Armand Lantheaume managed to win the two first round and finishes once again 1st.  The second leg was not a good one for Gilles and Alex managed to get the second place.  The third and final leg of the A final started with a small mistake from Alexis – Gilles took the lead and won, putting him 2nd over all.
With 7 cars in the main, and the first three places – Team Durango had a great week end in Vic La Gardiole!
