XB9 Double Win At East Bavarian Championship R3

XB9 Double Win At East Bavarian Championship R3

Round 3 of the East Bavarian Championship took place at the beautiful 3 Burgen Ring in Riedenburg on June 16/17. The weather was great and the organizers did a perfect job of preparing the track. Eighty drivers took part in the race, with 29 of them in the 40+ class.

Riedenburg is a very smooth and slippery track with tight corners. To be fast you need a car with a lot of steering and rotation, so the set-up has to be different than most other tracks.

In the Sportsman class, Stefan Stiegler with his new XRAY XB9 dominated qualifying and the semi-final. He started in the final from P1 and never looked back. Congratulations!

Result Sport Class:

1. Stefan Stiegler XRAY XB9
2. Ludwig Schmitt
3. Heinrich Wagner

The Pro class was very tight, with the best drivers separated by only between a few seconds. I started 4th in the final, but small mistakes and a engine stoppage during refueling set me back 10 seconds so I missed the podium and finishing 6th overall. Not bad, but more was possible.

Result Pro Class:

1. Stefan Scheunpflug
2. Sebastian Winterstein
3. Christian Stangelmeier
4. Luca Steinbauer
5. Tommi Scheidl
6. Florian Laux XRAY XB9
7. Markus Penzkofer
8. Florian Schrenk
9. Stefan Schott
10. Bruckner Martin

In the 40+ class, it was a tough battle between me and Peter Scheunpflug. We changed swapped very often in the final, but in the end I was able to win with a small gap between us.

Result 40+ Class:

1. Florian Laux XRAY XB9
2. Peter Scheunpflug
3. Armin Kobler

The XB9 worked very well the whole weekend – all XRAY cars in the race were fast and easy to drive.

Thanks to the MSC Riedenburg Club for this perfect race!

RC Robot Cars With Ultrasonic Rangefinder And IR Sensors

RC Robot Cars With Ultrasonic Rangefinder And IR Sensors

LayerOne badge hacking twofer

Here’s a pair of LayerOne Badge hacks that actually included the RC as intended by the badge designers.

First up, we have the autonomous RC car built by [Arko]. He calls it Stanley Jr. as an homage to the Stanford DARPA Grand Challenge vehicle. It uses an Arduino shield to add a servo with an ultrasonic rangefinder on it. The lets the vehicle drive a bit, stop and scan the horizon, then drive some more. The hope is the rangefinder will keep it from running into anything. There’s a quick test run embedded after the break.

On the right is the badge hack which [Zjpahle] finished up after the contest was already over. He also chose to go with an Arduino shield, this time it’s an IMU board. But he added a standalone Arduino board to the vehicle which drives some EL wire (ground effects) and adds IR sensors to the front of the car. The IR sensors are for obstacle avoidance, and the IMU lets him tilt his badge for direction control.

We looked at the winner of the badge hacking competition on Wednesday. That hack didn’t involve the car, but used the badge as a Morse Code beacon

And in the Truggy Class it was Ty Tessman, Jesse Robbers and Tyler Vik in 3rd, 15th and 18th.

With qualifying complete it was off to the Sunday Main events. First off was the 45 minute Truggy Main Event and it was an epic battle between Tessman and the elite of the 1/8th scale world. After holding off late race challenger Dakotah Phend, Ty Tessmann earned his first ROAR National Championship! HB/HPI’s Factory Team Drivers Jesse Robbers and Tyler Vik also battled it out in the Truggy A Main event, finishing in 7th and 10th.

On to the hour long Buggy final event! After almost an hour of intense battles it was once again Ty Tessman and Dakotah Phend fighting it out for win. The last lap saw the two trade leads several times and it came down to the last few corners to determine the Champion, with Ty Tessman coming accross the line by just three tenths of a second!

With the win Ty Tessmann became only the second driver ever to take both the ROAR Truggy and Buggy Nationals win in the same year!
